Henry's Moat

OS ref.

Church SN 044275

The church is in a prominent position close to the Motte of the original castle and adjacent to an earthwork of Iron Age date.  It was certainly in existence before the inventory was made for the ecclesiastical 'Texatio' of 1291 and there are records of  incumbents during the later Middle Ages and after the Reformation, when it was the the gift of the Wogan family. Other important local families included the Scourfields of New Moat and, later the Barhams of Trecwn, near Fishguard.  They retained their interest in the locality until a tragic road accident killed two generations of the family in 1938.
