Llanhywel OS ref. Church SM 818274 |
||||
| Dedicated to the Breton saint St Hywel, whom legend claims as one
of King Arthur's knights, this little church has associations with the early monastic or
clas foundations of the area. A stone inscribed with a dedication to Rinacus is though to belong to the 5th or 6th century and was brought from Carnhedryn. The building of the Norman church is related to the episcopacy of Bishop Bernard during the 12th Century. The north chapel is a 14th Century addition. Leaving Llanhywel for St Davids you will pass the Dowrog common. Once named Tir Pererinion, Pilgrims land, it was given to the church by Prince Rhys ap Tewdwr at the end of the 11th Century. |
