| Pilgrims sought cures at holy wells such as this one at Llanllawer. The well is enclosed by a vaulted chamber of rough masonry and was designed for bodily immersion. It once had a reputation for miraculous curses, especially for sore eyes when coins and pins were offered. Its reputation as a 'cursing' well comes from the tradition of placing bent pins in the water and this evidence of ill-wishing has pre-Christian overtones. Visits to holy wells were banned at the Reformation , but over the centuries, the fascination of the healing waters of these ancient springs has resulted in increasing visits by today's pilgrims.
