Church of the holy martyrs, Mathry

OS ref.

Church SM 879319

The present church built in 1869 is the most recent constructed on an ancient hilltop site, who's name may derive from the dedication. It may be that the martyrs were the six brothers rescued from drowning by St. Teilo, who, as related in the book of Llandaff, later settled at 'Mathry'.

Two stones in the church wall to the south of the gate are incised with Celtic crosses. One was found being used as a gatepost and the second as part of a farmhouse wall. A third stone, now in the porch, is dated to the 5th or 6th century AD and commemorates 'Maccuoicci, son of Caticuus' in Latin and Ogham script. There are accounts of ancient burials being found in various parts of the village which ties in with an alternative interpretation of 'Merthyr' as a place name. There was even a story of a witch who charmed cattle.
