Spittal takes its name from a medieval hospitium probably founded by Bishop Beck of St Davids to provide shelter for the pilgrims heading to the shrine in the cathedral. Little remains to indicate the site. The small parish church stands in the centre of the village and despite two Victorian restorations, a number of interesting features survive; there is the sanctus bellcote, squints, font and a possible Easter sepulchre. Pre-dating any of these, is a sixth century inscribed memorial stone in the porch.
